5 tips to improve speaking in English

Have you ever wondered why you are not comfortable to speak in public? Are you thinking or formulating your thoughts in your native language than in English or are you scared to face the audience? Here are five essential tips which can help you improve your communication skills.

Think In English

Try thinking in English when you’re trying to speak in English. If you think in your native language and try to speak English, you’ll always have to translate between languages.

Use an English-to-English dictionary to look up for words. In such a way you can avoid using your native language for translating words. You can also try this exercise of thinking in English in everything you do, such as when you are ordering for food or planning your day.

Listen As Much As Possible

To develop fluency, you must listen to English conversations attentively. For beginners, choose an interesting topic that has a transcript below so that you can read them aloud while you are listening. The main aim here is to make sure that you understand each word spoken and carefully grasp the speaking style.

Read Regularly

Reading is extremely important for improving your speaking skills. Reading helps us to focus upon four major steps – vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and writing. After you read try to summarise what you read in your mind in English or quickly note the new words you learned. Keep a dictionary ready to look up the meanings of the unknown words.

Talk To An English-Speaking Person

Join a club or volunteering an organization can be a great way to get to know people. If you cannot find such options then meet with tutors or friends online via Skype or Google Hangouts. Allow them to share their opinion so that you can improve your flaws.

Talk To Yourself

Say your thoughts aloud and practice more on your own. Hear your voice, record them and re-hear. You can also talk in front of a mirror by pretending you are speaking with someone. Try to analyze and understand where you are going wrong while expressing your ideas.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Surround yourself in all English-speaking environments where you can learn. Try to construct sentences with all new words you learn. Enjoy it! We learn more when it is fun.
